CLASSES with MEG ORR

Half and Half Quilt As You Go - Quilt OR Table  Choose to make a lovely quick and easy quilt-as-you-go quilt or a smaller table runner. Use that large patterned fabric that you do not want to cut into small pieces. All machine stitched and suitable for quilters of all levels who can use a rotary cutter and ruler and are on friendly terms with their machines.

4 Square Jelly Delight -  This is a quilt as you go project using your favourite jelly roll. Easy to learn technique suitable for all levels of machine sewers.

Window Peepers - Have lots of fun making these small canvasses that only require a small
amount of fabric. A simple Cathedral Window forms the frame and, after a small amount of machining, the “window” is stitched in by hand. The whole thing is then stretched over a small canvass. Makes a great gift for those special people in your life.
Easily finished in a day.

Quilting Basics One Day Workshop – In this class students will learn how to cut fabric using a rotary cutter and ruler. They will cut strips, squares and triangles. They will make binding and learn how to attach it to a project. We will be looking at different ways to make templates and learn about different types of appliqué. Different types of wadding will be looked at. A small project will be commenced in this class. This is a class for those wanting to begin quilting or very new quilters who would like to gain some confidence as they undertake their first projects.

Nine Patch Plus - Make this quilt in a day using a favourite fabric that you don’t really want to cut up. Using big squares and nine patches makes this a simple quilt for a beginner.

Tessellating Ties -  Using an easy Cathedral Window technique and use up lots of ties or any pretty little pieces of fabric that need a home.This is suitable for all levels of quilters but does include some small templates. It is all machine sewn except for the hand stitching required to insert the small “windows”. The quilt will not be finished in a day but is easily finished at home.

Touch of Asia – This little cameo shaped wall quilt uses a variation of Cathedral Windows. It is quite challenging and would suit quilters with a little bit of experience in cutting templates and sewing accurate seams. Once the design is mastered, the cameo-shaped centre opens up all possibilities for how the space could be used – appliqué etc.
The little quilt will not be finished in a day but a new technique will be learnt and it should be possible to finish it at home.

Australian Wildflower Quilt – This is a magnificent, traditional quilt using the machine appliqué method and one you will treasure the rest of your life. The flowers are very realistic and drawn from real life.

Sampler Sonata – Be inspired by how appealing a Sampler Quilt can look and how many techniques can be learned whilst making this quilt. Some techniques include drafting four pieced blocks from simple to more complex, different methods of hand appliqué setting blocks ‘on point’ and adding corners and borders and also adding surface texture with padding and embroidery.

Symbols of Japan – This colourful quilt celebrates the unique beauty of Japanese culture.
The appliqué designs are inspired by MON, a Japanese emblem, badge or crest. MON are highly stylized patterns based on geometric, floral or animal forms. Graphic designers recognize these shapes and forms to be arresting, rhythmic and an unforgettable form of art.
A quiltmaker will enjoy working with these lovely designs whilst exploring the placement of colour and tone to best effect.

Slice Of Flowers - A Colourful one block quilt.
The essence of this quilt is the artful blending of large print scraps with complimentary small prints. The cutting is quick, the hand or machine piecing is simple and the sashing is part of the block. Quilt-as-you-go assembly using a walking foot with feed dogs up means you can machine quilt with ease.
Gather all your scraps (6” squares) and have fun creating this quilt. A comprehensive text giving examples of alternative layouts for this quilt is included in this class.

Sugar and Spice – A circular theme is a feature of this quilt. Starting with a central pieced star, a series of appliquéd and pieced circular borders are added. Many techniques are explored, including hand and machine piecing, foundation piecing, hand and machine appliqué. The skilful use of colour takes this quilt beyond ordinary to extra special.

Rose Trellis – quick and easy quilt using a focus fabric or one-way design. Machine stitched and suitable for all levels but must be able to use a ruler and rotary cutter.

Beginners Sampler Quilt – This is a must do for patchwork beginners. Glynis will teach you all the basics for making a quilt and as you progress you will also learn how to put your blocks together, then some basic quilting and to finish, you will learn how to bind your quilt.

White on White Quilted Tote with Beaded Clasp – This project will easily be completed in a 4 week course. It is designed to appeal to all levels of ability, however some machine knowledge is preferred. Learn the art of free motion quilting while learning the freedom of creating your own feathers and frills. Students will learn how to easily gain ability and confidence on a small project and then apply what they learn on finishing their larger projects at home.

Fairies at Play – Make this beautiful quilt using a centre panel and surrounding it with pretty patchwork. It would look lovely sitting on the top of a little girl’s bed. Choose a different panel and you can make the same quilt for a boy.

CLASSES with EVELINE BEGG

Basic Sewing and Dressmaking Course
Prior to starting you will need to attend Tuesday 6th March for approx 1½ hours to be shown how to adjust, trace and cut out your pattern at home.

Stage One (2 sessions: Tuesday Mar 13th and 20th 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.)
This course is suitable for absolute beginners who wish to learn how to use a machine and gain skills in basic dressmaking. The course will be run in 2 stages where the first stage will be dedicated to students who have not used a sewing machine before or those who need to refresh their sewing machine skills. Students will become familiar with using and threading the sewing machine. They will gain confidence in sewing through various machine exercises which include sewing corners and curves. They will create fabric samples of a variety of sewing techniques such as basic seams, darts, gathering etc. Once these basic
skills have been mastered they are ready for the next stage of the course where they will learn how to use a commercial pattern. (Limited spaces – max. 6 students per class)

You are now ready to do Stage Two OR Basic Children’s Clothing (Monday class)

Stage Two (4 sessions: Tues. Mar 27th, Apr 3rd, 24th, May 1st 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.)
This part of the course is for those who are familiar with using a sewing machine and wish to learn basic dressmaking. In this stage the following areas will be covered:
a) How to choose a commercial pattern according to these measurements
b) How to use a commercial pattern understanding the symbols etc.
c) Learn basic construction techniques such as layout and cutting out, pattern making, order of assemble, how to insert a zip (I prefer to teach how to insert an invisible zip as I believe they look more professional and are easier to insert)
d) How to How to take accurate body measurements
e) obtain a professional finish to a garment
f) Create a skirt following a commercial pattern
g) Adding your own flair to a garment (e.g. Ruffled hem)

Basic Dressmaking – Children’s Clothing

Students will be required to know how to use a sewing machine or have completed Stage One of the Basic Sewing and Dressmaking course in order to complete this course.
Students will:

· Learn how to take correct body measurements for a child’s pattern
· Learn basic sewing techniques (e.g. Shirring, sewing with stretch knits)
· Create samples using a variety of sewing techniques
· Learn how to use a child’s commercial pattern
· Acquire information on factors affecting fabric choice and design (e.g. safety, comfort and flammability)
· Create a simple child’s garment from one of the following:
a) Shirred girl’s sundress (NAOMI Dress by Modkid designs)
b) Boy’s pyjamas (Kwiksew 3398)
c) Boy’s shirt (Kwiksew 2951)
d) Girls’ JULIA skirt by Modkid designs)

CLASSES with ELIZABETH WOOD

Machine Embroidery - If you have an Embroidery Machine and know the basic working but want to say “I can do anything” then this is the class for you.
I will teach you how to get the most out of you yourself and your machine.
Learning about stabilizers and fabrics I’m also certified in 5D software so any problems with design transfer to machines can be handled on the day.
I love embroidery machines and 5Dsoftware and here is a list of the machines I’ve used:
Pfaff CV and CS – Brother 3000, 4000 and 6000 – Bernina Aurora –Janome 11,000 and 350’s. Bring your machine along and let me guide you through projects so you can also say “It wasn’t that hard after all” Come join in the fun and find out how easy it can be.

Machine Embroidery incorporated into Patchwork and other techniques

Kimmni Dolls - Taking inspiration from the Japanese Koeshi dolls, this quilt is simple and dramatic all in one. During the class, we will look at how to stitch these wonderful dolls, avoiding “puckering” whilst embroidering dense designs, and how to put this quilt together. Class cost includes the CD collection of these wonderful designs, and instructions to take home on putting the quilt together.

I know what boys like!!! - A quilt for the boy/man in your life. We all know how difficult it is to find great designs for boys, with this class, and you will have your choice of 4 different embroidery collections to work with. Whether the male in your life is into Dinosaurs, realistic African animals, tribal artwork, or construction style vehicles, this class is for you. Classes will cover stitching out these magnificent designs to their best effect, and working out which of 3 quilt layouts will work best for your quilt. The class cost will include 1 embroidery collection of your choice, and quilt instructions for 3 quilt layouts.

Beautiful bugs - A quilt that will brighten up any day – these wonderful bugs and their smiling faces are a joy to all, and a wonderful way to use up smaller pieces of fabric. The class will cover basics of embroidering appliqué, completing foundation piecing quilting, and includes the 9 beautiful bug designs, 6 bug sayings, and instructions for putting together this quilt. Ideal for a baby quilt.

Give a Hoot - Owls are the latest thing, and in this class you will learn how to embroider them onto difficult fabrics (such as waffle weave, woollen blanketing, polar fleece). Complete this wonderful wall hanging of owls sitting in a painted tree (or birds in the tree, or cars going through the hills). As well as learning techniques that you will use for the rest of your embroidery career, we will also cover backing the quilt, and mitring the corners, with instructions that you will use for years to come.
